Nothing beats gathering around a campfire with your favorite people—crackling logs, warm glowy vibes, and the scent of golden marshmallows floating through the air. Ah yes… the mighty s’more. August 10th is National S’mores Day, and that means it’s time to fire up your marshmallow-roasting skills and whip up some gooey, crunchy, chocolatey goodness—with a quilty twist, of course.

In true Quilt Scouts fashion, we’re going beyond the basic graham-chocolate-mallow combo. This post is packed with fun facts, wild s’mores variations, and clever tips for indoor roasting (because not everyone’s got a campfire at the ready). We’ve even stitched in a special invitation to Quilt Camp 2025… because the only thing better than a s’more is a s’more with a side of quilting.

A Toasty Bit of History

The first official s’mores recipe appeared in the 1927 Girl Scout guidebook Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts. Originally dubbed “Some More,” the recipe was credited to troop leader Loretta Scott Crew and called for the usual suspects:

“Toast two marshmallows over the coals to a crisp gooey state and then put them inside a graham cracker and chocolate bar sandwich.”

It’s unclear when “some more” got smooshed into “s’more,” but the name stuck—and the treat became a camping rite of passage ever since.

🍫 The Classic S’more

Before we get wild, let’s pay homage to the OG. A classic s’more = pure campfire alchemy:

  • Graham crackers – the crunchy, slightly sweet foundation
  • Chocolate – the melty middle (Hershey’s is tradition, but you do you)
  • Marshmallow – roasted to your personal level of char perfection

Just roast your mallow, sandwich it with chocolate between two grahams, squish, and devour. Repeat as needed.

Let’s Experiment: Creative S’more Variations

Tips for Toasty Perfection

Roasting Style: Flames = charred. Embers = golden. Rotate slowly for even toastage.
Pre-Prep Your Stack: Have your chocolate + crackers/cookies ready before roasting to minimize mess and maximize gooeyness.
Tools Help: Long sticks, telescoping skewers, or campfire forks make everything easier (and safer).

No Campfire? No Problem!

Here are some indoor alternatives that still bring the melty magic:

  • Oven Bake: 350°F for 5–7 mins
  • Broil: ~1–2 mins, but watch like a hawk
  • Air Fryer: 370°F for 2–3 mins
  • Grill: Wrap in foil and heat ~4–5 mins
  • Tabletop Fire Pit: Mini campfire vibes at your kitchen counter (highly recommend for small-space Scouts)
