If your sewing room is overflowing with scraps (no judgment… we’re all living that “little fabric avalanche” lifestyle), these hexagon mug rugs are the cutest way to turn your leftovers into something functional and adorable. They’re perfect for hot cocoa nights, gift baskets, holiday tables, or — my personal fave — leveling up your quilt camp coffee station.

Supplies

  • (2) 10″ fabric squares
    • Optional: Make one of these squares a patchwork panel using scraps or improv piecing. You can even design a little mini-block and fussy cut your hexagon around it.
  • (1) 10″ batting square
  • 36″ of 2.5″ binding
  • 100% cotton thread (Aurifil 50wt is my fave)
  • 7″ hexagon template
  • Rotary cutter, quilting ruler, scissors, etc.

Step 1: Prep Your Squares

Cut two fabric squares at 10″ x 10″ and one matching piece of batting.

If you’re feeling extra spicy (which I fully support), use one 10″ square as a patchwork creation: improv your scraps together, sew up a mini block, or stitch something fun you can center inside the hexagon later.

Step 2: Make a Quilt Sandwich

Layer your pieces like a delicious quilty s’more:

  1. Fabric square (right side down)
  2. Batting
  3. Fabric square or patchwork panel (right side up)

Baste however you like — pins, spray, glue… whatever fuels your inner wilderness quilter.

Step 3: Quilt as Desired

Go wild… or go simple.

  • Straight lines
  • Grid quilting
  • Swirls
  • Random, “I just need 10 minutes of zen stitching” lines

There’s no wrong choice. Your mug rug, your adventure.

Step 4: Cut Out Your Hexagon

Grab your 7″ hexagon template and place it on the quilted sandwich.

Scout tip: If you created a patchwork center, rotate the template until your favorite area sits perfectly in the middle. Fussy-cut magic, baby.

Hold the template steady and cut carefully around all six sides.

Boom. You’ve got a quilted hexie.

Step 5: Bind Your Mug Rug

Time to give your hexagon a fresh little outfit.

Bind just as you would a small quilt:

  • Use straight-grain binding (bias works too!)
  • Take your time around the angles
  • Fold, stitch, flip, and finish the binding on the back

Step 6: Sip + Admire

Place your mug rug on your favorite cozy surface, pop a warm drink on top, and enjoy that sweet, sweet handmade satisfaction.

Then immediately make five more — because you know your mug collection has range.
